BEGIN 2 NETWORK
What are you waiting for? Let's Begin 2 Network together.
WELCOME
Welcome to the latest Begin 2 Network (B2N) update.
B2N has been created to help connect people, businesses, charities, community groups and opportunities across our communities. Our goal is simple: help people move from isolation to participation, contribution and opportunity.
SEPTEMBER 2026
From Ideas to Action
September has been a busy and productive month for Begin 2 Network, with more time spent out in the community, volunteering, meeting people and developing new opportunities.
Throughout the month, B2N has continued to build connections across Southam and the surrounding area, while developing ideas around biodiversity, community growing, volunteering, skills and bringing people together.
Some ideas have developed into potential projects, while others have come directly from conversations with residents, community organisations and people already working within our local communities.
This month’s newsletter looks back at what happened during September and where some of these new opportunities could lead next.
ECOFEST LEAMINGTON SPA
Saturday 5 September 2026
September got off to an inspiring start with a visit to EcoFest in Leamington Spa, an event bringing together organisations, speakers and communities with a shared interest in sustainability, biodiversity and climate action.
The day provided an opportunity to listen to talks, meet people involved in environmental projects and discover ideas that could potentially be adapted within Southam and through Begin 2 Network.
For B2N, EcoFest was about more than attending an event. It helped reinforce the direction already developing around biodiversity, community growing, wildlife, recycling and practical ways for people to get involved in their local environment.
Several of the ideas and connections made during September have continued to develop since the event — particularly around creating practical biodiversity projects that combine community involvement, education and wellbeing.
SOUTHAM UNITED FC
Volunteering at the Club
During September, Begin 2 Network continued volunteering at Southam United Football Club, helping with practical jobs around the grounds.
Work during the month included hand mowing, litter picking and tidying the disabled car park area, including hoeing weeds to improve the appearance of the area as people arrive at the club.
These are relatively simple jobs, but regular volunteer support can make a noticeable difference to a community facility and to the experience of the people who use it.
For B2N, volunteering is also about getting involved, contributing practical skills and supporting organisations within the local community.

FLYING FIELDS ESTATE
Listening to Residents and Looking at the Environment
During September, Begin 2 Network spent time at Flying Fields following concerns being raised about the condition and maintenance of areas around the estate.
A walk around the site provided an opportunity to speak with residents, photograph some of the issues being raised and look more closely at the green spaces and biodiversity across the development.
During the visit, there was also an opportunity to speak with a member of the maintenance team working on the estate. I was joined by a local resident with a background in biodiversity, giving us the opportunity to share knowledge and observations while looking at the estate's green spaces, planting, wildlife value and maintenance.
Photographs and information gathered during the visit helped build a clearer picture of some of the issues affecting the estate. These included cracks appearing in paved areas following the extreme heat, cracking in the mounds near the play area, and concerns that no life rings are provided around the soakaway pools.
Other observations included the condition of trees, planting and maintained areas across the development, as well as opportunities to improve biodiversity and make better use of some of the green spaces.
For B2N, this is about more than identifying problems. It is also about listening to residents, bringing people together and looking at what can realistically be improved, while exploring opportunities for greater community involvement and environmental improvements across Flying Fields.

160 HOURS OF VOLUNTEERING
Giving Time Back to the Community
September also marked a milestone for Begin 2 Network Director John Farey, who has now completed 160 hours of volunteering across the local community.
Those hours have been built up through practical involvement with local organisations and community activities, from serving tea and coffee and helping at events to gardening, maintenance, litter picking and other hands-on volunteering.
160 hours is the equivalent of 20 full eight-hour working days given to supporting the local community.
Volunteering is an important part of what Begin 2 Network is about. It provides opportunities to meet people, understand local organisations and communities, share skills and experience, and see first-hand where support can make a difference.
It also demonstrates the pathway at the heart of B2N:
Connection → Participation → Contribution → Responsibility → Leadership → Skills → Employment
Sometimes making a difference starts simply by turning up and getting involved.
PALLET PROJECT CHALLENGE
Building for Wildlife
September saw another practical biodiversity project take shape, with Begin 2 Network Director John Farey building a hedgehog hotel using recycled pallet wood and other reused materials.
The project developed step by step, from constructing the main box and entrance to adding a wooden base, raised feet and a sloping roof protected with reused waterproof material.
The aim was to demonstrate how simple materials that might otherwise be discarded can be turned into something useful for local wildlife, combining recycling, creativity and biodiversity in one project.
Hedgehogs need suitable places to shelter, rest and nest, and projects like this can also be a great way of encouraging families and children to learn more about the wildlife living around them.
The hedgehog hotel is also the beginning of a wider Pallet Project Challenge, exploring what else can be created for wildlife using recycled materials, with ideas including bug hotels and other wildlife habitats.
Reuse it. Build it. Give wildlife a home.
DISCOVERING SOUTHAM’S WILDLIFE
B2N & iNaturalist
During September, Begin 2 Network started using iNaturalist, a worldwide nature platform where people can photograph and record plants, animals, insects and other wildlife they discover.
After being introduced to iNaturalist, B2N began exploring how the platform could be used to make discovering local biodiversity more interactive and fun.
This led to B2N creating two fun wildlife challenges on iNaturalist, giving people different ways to get involved, get outdoors and see what they can discover around Southam.
Rather than simply telling people about biodiversity, the challenges encourage people to go out and find it for themselves — whether that is a plant they have never noticed before, an insect in the garden, a bird, fungi or other local wildlife.
One of the challenges has also been designed with families in mind, allowing children to enjoy discovering and recording wildlife while the adult remains in control through their phone.
Every observation can become part of the wider information being collected through iNaturalist, meaning people can have fun locally while contributing to a worldwide record of biodiversity.
It is free to take part, and B2N hopes the challenges will encourage more people to look a little closer at the wildlife that is all around us.
How much wildlife can you discover?

SUPPORTING LOCAL ORGANISATIONS
Turning Ideas into Action
September has also been about putting the B2N approach into practice — attending local meetings, listening to issues being raised within the community and then looking at practical ways to respond.
Through involvement with Southam in Bloom, Begin 2 Network has continued supporting efforts to improve and maintain the local environment, bringing gardening and landscaping experience alongside practical volunteering.
Attending Southam Town Council meetings has also provided an opportunity to hear directly about some of the challenges facing local organisations. Two of the needs raised were Southam United Football Club requiring additional volunteer support and Southam Christmas Lights being in need of support.
B2N Director John Farey responded to the call for volunteers at Southam United Football Club and has since completed 25 hours of volunteering at the club, assisting with maintenance including hand mowing, litter picking and tidying areas around the site.
Alongside the ongoing support for Southam in Bloom, these are good examples of the approach Begin 2 Network is developing:
Attend → Listen → Identify the Need → Develop an Idea → Take Action
Rather than simply discussing what could be done, B2N aims to turn community conversations into practical support and action.
